Player Run Library - The Struggle

Dmitri

Neophyte
I'm trying to put together a player run library of actual books. I had one on OSI UO and I loved it. But when I Secure a book shelf it makes it where no one can look in it. When I secure it but make it open to the public people can take the books.

I got a small classic house and set everything up and no one could actually see the books I've collected. so I spent all my money getting a custom plot. Someone helping me told me that was the reason I couldn't make the locked down shelves public. After spending all my money to get a plot with no walls we found that again you cannot secure books and let the public read it.

What can I do to make a publicly view-able library where I can showcase the wonderful stories that UO has already as well as the player written books that I have collected?

How can I secure my books from theft and decay yet make it where others can enjoy?

You have to lock the books down individually!

Then if your house is open to the public, so your books will be.

You'll have to separate your books with benches to make them look nice and tidy :)

On second thought I'm not sure how tidy books and benches would be...
They are just fine. They are what I use.

@Dmitri - Take a look at my rune library to get an idea of how to set yours up. You can hope the gate at West Brit Bank from my gater Rasta Man. Make sure to take the gate that says Bottom level.

A number of UOFs finest tales are available on my vendor outside the main Trinsic gate at the Trinsic Trading Company. Such as "The Tale of Jack Scallywag", " Skye Wolfbane Arrives" and of course a Trinsic holiday favorite.. "The night before Trinsmas".

Books with benches doesn't look nearly as good as runebooks. plus there's tons of Rune Libraries already avaliable.

I am always taking donations of books to put in my library. I have 40 or so of the NPC written books. If you want to donate a player written book to my collection I'm usually hanging out at Trin bank or some one in Trin can message me.

So the Yew rune library is yours, I have been using it since the day I joined UO a year ago. Never knew the owner but a big thank you to you for keeping it alive all these while. Cheers mate. <3

I got an interesting book off some guy who asked if I read the other day, I'd be happy to donate. :)

You could always lock the books down on your floor and raise them so they appear to be laying on the bookshelf....and then just change the security on them individually.

The problem is you can't actually change the security on them like a container on this server like you should.

EDIT: Lord @halygon is right.. the owner can set security, i was mistaken. ALL HAIL OVERLORD HALYGON.

I think he misunderstood me. You can change security on individual books.

I'm not talking about putting them in a bookshelf, but locking them down on a floor and raising them with a deco tool so that they appear to be laying on the shelf.

Doesn't look the greatest, but it works :/

You can also use music stands to display books.

I actually have a copy of all the available NPC books that my thief stole from the bookshelves in the cities. I just stack them on top of each other for a cluttered library look.
