Dexxers

the no magic in town phase back on OSI is basically what spawned the whole concept of dexers. town fights were actually super fun with no magic IMO, turned into huge battle royale with everyone in their invuln plate charging into the melee or archers on the tops of buildings sniping, etc

was a different kind of fun compared to insta dying to 2 mages mana dumping you
I am not sure how accurate this is. Here are the old patch notes: http://web.archive.org/web/20120424122259/http://update.uo.com:80/oldpatch.shtml

I can tell you that before Order & Chaos (Junes 1998), there was a system of "Virtue Guards" - this could be mage or dexxor - could fight in town or out of town without being flagged criminal BUT had to always wear either the Order shield (Then known as Silver Serpent shield) or Chaos shield to be able to fight each other -- this is the era of roach mages - mages who could wear a shield and cast at the same time.

As far as I know, not being able to cast in town was just a UO Beta thing.

I enjoyed the Order / Chaos system - I mean really you get that active again, and you've got your 1v1 or small numbers fights, leave miltiias for the group fighting :)

which patch notes are you looking at? That link lists a bunch of updates

I remember no magic in town definitely post-beta since I didn't play beta, but did play in 97/98 - I believe you could still cast beneficial spells and heals on people (birth of blue healers) in town, but no offensive magic

I do remember order/chaos was huge at the time (I loved order/chaos, and the blessed 30 AR shields that look way better than every other shield is nice) since there was no factions at the time

Strange enough, but it used to be a thing. For a certain period (not entirely sure on era, but I think it may have been pre-UOR?), no offensive spells could be cast in town. Led to people making characters referred to as "townies".

I think the no magic town could be a fun militia cap point battle for a nice incentive. The builds would really have to change to be successful. I think we would see a lot of hiding, detect hidden builds. Could encourage a lot of people to PvP more as well.

builds would be different for sure especially if meta pet magic also didnt work in town.

lol "townie" was like the worst UO slur you could be called back then by the pissed off mages
