Lumberjacking, Cutting down trees

I am having an issue chopping down trees. It doesn't matter what type of axe/hatchet I use, or what tree I try, it says "you can't use an axe on that". Granted, I have only been back playing for 2weeks, I used to play all the time back in the 90's..I only recently came across UOF and started playing again.

Is the axe equipped? It should be to chop trees.

I also have a way easier time if I turn the trees off in the UOF launcher for targeting purposes. This makes all trees look the same, but takes away from prettiness.

Try turning off the Circle of Transparency. You're probably seeing through the tree and targeting the terrain.
